In 1932 Roosevelt won the elections, republicans' reactions to the Wall Street crash influenced on people's point of view. This may or may not have had a mayor role in the result of the election.
Hoover wasn't a very good president, he was considered a 'do nothing' president. He believed that things would be done by themselves, or that the weren't his fault, since he didn't want to intervene in the economy, for example when he said that the depression was because of economic problems in Europe, not USA. Not only did he place the blame on other countries but he didn't accept the fact that social security was the governments responsibility, republicans feared that people would work less and become less independent if the governments helped them. Hoover and most republicans were unwilling to modify their basic policies.
After this, in the elections, republicans had the wort defeat in their history, Roosevelt won by 7 million votes. His victory wasn't a coincidence, Roosevelt had a quite different way of thinking, first off, he was a democrat. He believed that an 'active government' would improve ordinary people's lives, he wanted to spend public money to get people back to work and he wasn't afraid to ask for advice on important issues. Apart from this, his campaign was of big help; he went on a 20,800km train tour all around USA, he gave 16 mayor speeches and 60 more from the back of his train, that attacked Hoover and the republicans. He also promised people a New Deal, which then happened.
In the end, they both had 'good intentions', just that one was more clever than the other and got more involved with people making things 'equal'.
